Property Tax Appraised Value Protests
How to challenge the appraised value of your property before your tax bill is set.
Assessment date. Your property value is determined based on its condition and market value as of this date. Ownership on January 1 determines who is responsible for the tax bill for the year.
Payment deadline for the previous year's tax bill. Payments postmarked on or before January 31 are on-time. Payments after this date accrue penalty and interest.
Notice of Appraised Value is mailed by the Travis Central Appraisal District (TCAD) for the current tax year.
Deadline to file most exemption applications for the current tax year. Homestead, over-65, disabled person, disabled veteran, and other exemptions have this filing deadline, though some can be applied for later with proration.
Deadline to file a protest against the appraised value with the Appraisal Review Board (ARB). The exact date is 30 days after the Notice of Appraised Value is mailed.
Property tax bills are mailed for the current tax year. Bills reflect the certified appraised value, exemptions, and the tax rates set by all applicable taxing units.
Applications for installment plans open in October and continue through January 31. Applying earlier gives you more time to make the first installment.
