Apply for a property tax installment plan

Split your annual property tax bill into four quarterly payments. Available to homeowners who qualify under Texas Tax Code Chapter 31.

Important to know

Eligibility

Available to homestead property owners and disabled veterans. Other property classes generally do not qualify. Contact the Tax Office if you are unsure about your eligibility.

Cost

No application fee. Standard penalty and interest apply only if an installment is paid late; on-time installments avoid penalties entirely.

Timeline

Applications open in October each year for the following tax year. Four installments are due in January, March, May, and July.

Process step-by-step

  1. Confirm you qualify

Review the eligibility rules under Texas Tax Code Chapter 31. The most common qualifying categories are homestead owners and disabled veterans. If you are not sure, call the Tax Office before applying.

  2. Gather your account number

Find your tax account number on your most recent statement, or look it up online by your property address. The application requires this number to associate your installment plan with the correct parcel.

  3. Submit the application

Complete the installment plan application online, by mail, or in person. Online submission is the fastest and provides an immediate confirmation number. Paper applications take 5 to 7 business days to process.

  4. Pay your first installment

Your first installment is due in January. You can pay online, by mail, or in person. Set a calendar reminder for each subsequent installment due date so no payment is late.

  5. Keep your installments on time

Late installments accrue penalty and interest, and may cancel the installment agreement. If you are at risk of missing a payment, contact the Tax Office immediately to discuss options.
